Supported by EU and NRW funding for the circular economy.
The textile industry faces significant challenges regarding sustainability and resource use. While global fiber production reached 124 million tonnes in 2023, polyester (polyethylene terephthalate, PET) accounts for 57% of this, making it the industry’s oil-based workhorse. Although the textile industry continues to show strong growth, value creation has so far been organized linearly and is heavily dependent on limited resources. After disposal, textiles today are predominantly incinerated or landfilled. The textile value chain is now responsible for 10% of global CO2 emissions. Regulatory measures such as the European separate collection obligation for used textiles or the “EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles” aim to make the textile value chain more sustainable. As a result, recycling technologies for textiles are being developed.

ReSolution has developed a process that combines sustainability and economic viability and can significantly avoid CO2 as well as typical chemical waste. To establish this chemical textile recycling process on an industrial scale, it is necessary to develop and operate the industrial prototype for the electrochemical process.
Building a supplier network

Establishing a regional supplier network for key components ensures that high-quality plant components are available and contributes to sustainable cost reduction.
Prototype construction for electrochemical textile recycling

Building a prototype makes it possible to test operations and optimize them for different fiber blends.

Zero-emission-recycling of mixed textiles

ReSolution's water-based technology allows cotton to be preserved, while polyester is broken down into its building blocks (monomers), ready to be used in virgin-quality fiber applications.
Prototype development and testing

Advancing the technology from the lab into a functional prototype to test operations, and prepare it for the market.

Selective removal of elastane

Elastane ensures wearing comfort but is a major obstacle to textile recycling, often causing garments to be incinerated. This project utilizes a newly developed chemical process to remove elastane from real textile waste while preserving the quality of the remaining fibers.
Cross-border circular process chain

Partners from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany collaborate to demonstrate the entire value chain. This ranges from intelligent fiber sorting (Recytex Europe) and elastane removal (Purtiso) to ReSolution recycling the purified polyester into virgin-quality raw materials for new textiles.

Project name
‍

PURE-TEX - Processing of used textiles through the selective removal of spandex for polyester recycling (Aufbereitung von Alttextilien durch selektive Entfernung von Elastan für das Polyesterrecycling)

Project partner
‍

re.solution GmbH, Recytex Europe, Purtiso

Goals
‍

To establish a complete, cross-border process chain for the chemical recycling of elastane-blended textiles, transforming regional textile waste into a new circular industry
